Want To See Where I Play

I don't know about anyone else but all it takes is for me to see another blogger show pictures of their sewing space and it sends me into a frenzy of cleaning and organizing. Just recently a few of the blogs I follow did just that and it was perfect timing too becasue I had just finished making the test bags I was doing and my room sure needed something doing to it.
One thing I do regret now is not taking any before photos.

I didn't want to spend any money on making new curtains or anything else for that matter so I sat down for a moment and thought how I could brighten up my sewing room with what I already had.

The curtains were the biggest issue. My sewing room gets a lot of sun and the curtains I had up were my bedroom curtains which stayed in this room when I converted it to my sewing room. Some time ago I switched rooms so my work room was downstairs and my bedroom is now upstairs. So these curtains came down and I put them back in my bedroom where I needed less light.

And these which were the original ones in my sewing room came down from the bedroom and put up in my sewing room. Am I confusing you. LOLL
This photo was taken at 7.15am. As you can see the sun is already shining through and it gets a lot brighter during the course of the day.

So all curtains washed and hung next was my cutting table. I had some old kitchen curtains from about 10 years ago LOLLL yes I am a bit of a hoarder but only when it comes to fabric. I wasn't sure about the yellow but once I put it in place I liked how it looked. Before you could see all the stuff I had stored under there. Now it's nicely disguised.

Next up was to organize my work surface. I like to keep the things I've made on display. My bags are displayed on the back of the room door but I haven't shown you that photo because I have four bags hanging there that I can't show you yet.

This is how I store my bag hardware.

These containers are so useful and I'll be buying some more to store beads that I have which I sew onto some of the bags.

This is my serger which is to the left of my cutting table. I don't use it much now so I put a display board behind it. The patchwork on there is part of one of the next two bags I have to sew.

This is how I store my thread. It works better for me than having them displayed on a peg board on the wall. I found an ice cube tray that had a lid and thought it was perfect for keeping the bobbins.

This is where I sit to sew. In the late morning the sun moves from the front window over to this side and the sun comes blazing in. This part of my room is still a work in progress. I want to make better use of the space under the tables so at some point I'll be changing that.

Oh dear!!! my grotty ironing board needs a new cover. Ummm I have some nice yellow gingham fabric somewhere.

I had a couple of artificial roses which I cut back and used as curtain ties.

Then I pinned some felt ornaments I made quite some time ago to the curtains.

This is another work in progress. My fabric needs to be sorted as I've just been pulling it out and putting it back anywhere lately. I may even get some plastic storage boxes for the one's I don't use that often. The computer table is too big for this corner. It had my old computer on it but since getting my laptop the computer died so I don't need a large table there but that's a job for much later. I'll have to think hard how I can use something I already have that will work better here.

Then after a days cleaning, washing curtains and organizing, at midnight I sat down to make this cushion for my poor tired tootsie. LOLLL
I need to make another one for my other chair.

And this is the final view of my sewing room. This photo is taken from the door as you walk in. It still needs some improvements but I'm really pleased with it so far.

I hope this post has inspired you to clean and organize your sewing space. It doesn't matter if you have a studio or a little corner of a room or just a dining room table when everything is tidy I find it so inspiring and can't wait to start sewing again but today is the kitchens turn. Maybe around midnight I'll sew another cushion for my tootsie again. LOLL

Hope you all have a wonderful weekend.
Happy cleaning, organizing and sewing.

  4. Maria, I have table envy. You have such a large table to cut fabric on. I have a teeny little foldable table. My sewing room is the size of a bathroom. It's shared by everyone as well. Of course it's messy all the time. You have an industrial sewing machine as well. I can't use these scary machines at all. It's like my feet have its own brain and pedals faster than I can sew. You have a very nice sewing room. If I have such a room, I would live in it.

  5. Looks great, Maria. What a bright and cheerful place to sew!. Nothing looks better than a tidy seewing room. How do we keep them that way? I always promise myself that I will clean and tidy after every project but you know as well as I do that some times you don't have that time.

  8. This is just beautiful! One of the biggest mistakes in my life was to have bought a new home without a defined sewing space - I regret it deeply. Your area is so pretty! Enjoy it!

  9. So nice to see your sewing space Maria. Now I can picture you at your machine as you test a bag or make one for a customer, lol!!! That ironing board isn't that bad, I have seen a lot worse! Nice natural light in your room. Thanks for linking this post to my Weekend Link Party. Have a nice weekend Maria.

  10. Oooo I wish I had a sewing room (I have a corner in the dining room). Yours is so nice and functional looking, but neat and organized. If I had a room this is most likely what it would look like too (because I'd steal that rose curtain tie-back idea--so pretty!). Some craft rooms look so decorated and pristine I wonder if any sewing ever gets done, lol. I should have taken a picture of my dining room table last night before I cleaned it up. I've been working on a scrap quilt and four rulers, two markers, a seam ripper, and a pair of scissors were unearthed as I cleaned up. And that was one night of sewing.

  12. It's so bright and cheerful and pretty! When I refer to my sewing room as my dungeon, I'm not even exaggerating - it's an unfinished basement room, which I share with the furnace ... there are no windows, no finished floor/walls/ceiling - the only good things are that I have lots of plugs, nobody bothers me in there, and it's pretty big :D

  13. Looks lovely and spacious. Mine is a disaster area ... I'm so not organized .. which is why I seldom sew, I can't find my table.

  14. What a beautiful workspace with all that natural light. You've done a wonderful job with it. I especially like your hardware containers and your ice cube tray with a lid--I love that idea for storing bobbins! Thanks for sharing your sewing space with us.

My space is currently "portable"--I set up a table upstairs so I can be around the family and sew instead of barricading (sp?) myself in the basement. I take it down on the weekends for a rest.

  15. Love your space Maria, I love seeing other peoples sewing/craft rooms, love your bobbin storage and your curtain on your cutting table! It looks like you have a nice bright area to do what you love to do! I can have my room pretty spotless and then I immediately make something and it is a vicious circle keeping it nice and tidy! Happy Weekend to you too! Nancy

  19. What a lovely sewing room/studio! I'm loving your cutting table! What did you use for the top? I'm on the hunt for a good high-enough cutting area for my sewing studio and am looking for any and all ideas for how to make one ourselves.

  21. I never imagined your sewing room would be so neat Maria.
Not that I think your a messy person...its just that your always sewing ( sometimes i'm convinced you don't sleep) and anyone that produces as much as you do can't possible have time to tidy up her " creative mess" !! LOL
Here is a link to my "cleaned " sewing room...today it doesn't look that way...its a "creative mess again!! LOL
