Feeling Girly

Ok so I'm supposed to be testing a bag for Samantha right now but since I finished testing a quilt, which I can't tell you much about now until the pattern is released, I've been feeling all girly so thought I'd redo my bedroom.

The quilt is on the bed and looks gorgeous but it needed to have some things matching so the last few days I made a topper for my chest of draws and a fabric basket for my makeup to replace the old one that didn't match at all in my room.

That's my mum and dad in the photo with me at 2 months old. I don't like having family photos around the house but I don't mind in my bedroom so I have this one. One of my dad alone. Photos of my kids when they were little and one of my great grandmother.

This is the method I used for making the topper.
First I cut out all my pieces out at 3" x 3" then I lay them onto the sticky side of interfacing.

I ironed them to the interfacing.

And then sewed the long rows with a 1/4" seam allowance. Then the short sides and it done.
You can find the tutorial HERE, it's by Oh, Fransson and makes life so much easier than sewing the squares individually.

I love the binding.

The fabric basket for my make up was a bit of trial and error. I wasn't sure if this would be the right size. I think it could be a bit smaller and the handles could be closer together. I'll make adjustments on my next one.

On the other hand if it was just a bit taller it would be perfect for holding toilet rolls. I managed to fit 4 in this basket.

Happy Sewing.

  2. Very pretty - I love all the flower prints! I was working on a basket today too, but it wasn't a pretty feminine one - it was a spooky Halloween one (using up some remnants that someone gifted me with) :D

  6. The runner and the basket are very girly looking and so pretty.
Years and years ago they sold interfacing here with grid marks in 1", 2" and 3" squares so you could make patchwork like that tutorial. I think some places might still sell it. I had used it on a couple of small things I made and I still have some of it somewhere. If you wanted to use a larger square than 3" on the 3" grid, you would cut double or triple that size and line it up on the lines. The 1" squares finish at 1/2" and the whole thing gets very thick that small. Still it is easier to sew and your seams are perfect that way.

  7. Thank you for sharing this idea. I like the colors - it looks kind of girly but not too girly. The basket is sewn the way I like as well.
    Happy quilting.
