March Bag of the Month Completed

1st of March and it's the turn of Samantha from At home with Mrs H to share her design for the Bag of the Month Club and before I get carried away and forget you can buy the hardware from Samantha too so check that out HERE.

Now I know some of you think I'm super quick at sewing and never seem to sleep so you'll be happy to know that I didn't just whip this one up today. I was one of the testers for Samantha's bag which I was very thankful for as I've still to make the January and February bag. I'm hoping to get those done in March but that depends what comes along during that month. Fingers crossed because those were lovely bags too.

Ok here's my version of Samantha's Convertible Bag.  Surprise!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's not brown.
I had this fabric for some time and have wanted to make some kind of bag with it so thought now was the time. I usually quilt my bags because I use fleece/batting and because I use upholstery fabrics a lot of the time I can't iron the fleece on because most upholstery fabrics don't react well to ironing.

I love the thumb catch on this bag.

This was the first time I'd sewn the bottom corners like this and loved the outcome.

Inside I made two slip pockets with room for a pen in the center but the pattern also has an optional inside zipper.

I also like the big outside pocket. Perfect for keeping your cell phone and keys.

And look how clever this design is. If you unclip the straps at the side and pass them though a loop at the back it converts into a backpack.

Another handy zipper pocket at the back to keep things nice and safe. The strap on this bag is very long and adjustable so you could also use it across the body. So there's three ways to use it, on your shoulder, across your body or as a backpack.

This is the third bag from the Bag of the Month Club but if you'd like to join in you still can and also get the January and February bag. I'm having a few internet issues and can't get onto Sara's blog to share the link for the Bag of the Month but if you click HERE it will take you too Emmalinebags where you can read the details and find the link to join.

Thanks for stopping by.

  2. So funny you should post a bag with that type of boxed bottom - I just learned how to do it a few days ago, and LOVE the look! Wish I'd tried it earlier - I always looked at the tutorials, thought to myself it wouldn't work so didn't try it until recently :D

Great bag! That's a really nice design (although I have to wonder - how many adult women convert and use their purse/bag ... as a backpack? LOL!) - I like the closure on the front flap - I like messenger type bags but they really need some kind of closure on them for safety - and for looks!

  3. Nicely done Maria! I like yours quilted. Now I understand the "convertible" part of the name. When I saw the photo of the bag fronts, I wondered what it converts to. I think I wouldn't wear it as a backpack, as I prefer a cross the body instead, so I will make my strap shorter. I have made small zip bags with that kind of boxed corner before and they are fun. I will have to figure out what fabrics to use with this one. I hope I will be able to start this bag this month too. I have other things to finish and I need to start cleaning and organizing the garage next too! I will work on the garage a little every day and not try to do too much there, so I can still have time to create.

  6. Mia - This bag is simply wonderful. My daughter walked by as I was reading your post and demanded that I make her one. She's sixteen and the Mom label is not her favored, but every once in a while, she wants something bad enough she asks me to make it. Thank you for popping by my blog and leaving such sweet comments. I am happy to have found your blog. ~Kelly
